He was born and raised in Moorseville, N.C. In 1966, he graduated from Socastee High School in Myrtle Beach, S.C. and entered the United States Air Force on June 14, 1967. On June 16, 1971, he married Doris-Mai (Deschaine) Caldwell of Madawaska, Maine.

His duties in the Air Force included being a fireman and recruiter and he was a decorated Vietnam War veteran. He proudly served 20 years and retired in 1987. Dan had a love for history and loved to share it with others. He served as an Authenticity Coordinator to several western movies and acted in movies and commercials. He was the narrator for the Bandera Cattle Company gun fighter group and was a volunteer historical tour guide at Fort Chadbourne in Bronte. He was also involved with Living History re-enactments at Fort Concho in San Angelo and Fort Mason in Mason.
He was preceded in death by his father Kenneth Clyde Caldwell; and his mother Ellen Mae Caldwell.
He is survived by his wife Doris-Mai Caldwell; his son Kenneth Caldwell and wife Kimberly Caldwell of San Antonio; his daughter Dawn-Renee Rice and husband Steven Rice of Longview; his sister Shirley Layton of Mount Pleasant, S.C.; his twin sister Donna Britt and husband Ed Britt of Greenville, S.C.; grandchildren Alexis McKinney and Elena Caldwell; step-grandchildren Shelby and William Rice; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Burial will be held at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio with full military honors at 10:45 a.m. on Aug. 15. A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will follow at Grimes Funeral Chapel in Bandera at 4 p.m. on Aug. 15.
The family of Dan Caldwell wishes to extend their sincere thanks to Dr. Michael D. Kwan, MD and Dr. Chandra Kunavarapu, MD and the staff of the Texas Transplant Physician Group. They also wish to thank Dr. Jorge Alvarez, MD and all the staff at Methodist Heart Hospital for their excellent care and concern during the past year. Dan was a great friend and mentor to me and I can not say how many people he educated and inspired! Dan at least got to leave this earth with his boots on doing what he liked most,
