Brough was a veteran of WWI. He served with Co. I 4th Infantry Division. He was wounded in Verdun on October 6, 1918. His service records describes it as G.S.W. (gunshot wound). On his World War I service card, Form No. 724-9 A. G. O. (listing personal information, organizations served in, ranks held, engagements, wounds, and discharge date for him) in the wounded in action section it states 'Severely'.

According to a divorce notice published in 1964 in the Public Opinion, Brough and his wife, Mary Elizabeth Suders, were married October 11, 1922, in Hagerstown.

In March 1930, their seven day old daughter died. See memorial and accompanying death certificate for Daisy Armstrong. She is buried with Brough.

It is unclear if they were ever formerly divorced. She is buried in Parklawns Memorial Gardens.
