Elma Walkup, 94, of North Loup, Neb., died on May 31, 1998, at the Valley County Nursing Home in Ord, Neb., where she had lived the last four years.
She was born on May 9, 1904, in Farnam, Neb., the daughter of William and Alice (Adams) Van Horn. In 1910, the family moved to the North Loup area, where Alma received her education. Following her 1922 graduation from North Loup High, she stayed in the homes of local families, watching their children.
On February 15, 1927, she married Carl Walkup at the Van Horn family farm. Prior to Carl's death in 1980, the couple lived on various farms in the North Loup area. Elma was hired to care for Lena Mulligan's husband, and also worked at the North Loup Cafe.
Elma was a member of the North Loup Seventh Day Baptist Church and the American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed crocheting and, when she was younger, played the piano. She remained a resident of North Loup throughout her life,
and lived at No Lo Villa prior to moving to Ord.
Survivors include one son, [Gordon] Dean, and one daughter, Vicki Rowbal, both of North Loup; 14 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, and six
great-great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one son, Lorren; one daughter, Helen Potomic; three brothers, Lloyd, Elwood, and Ray; and one sister, Hazel Ingraham.
Funeral services were held on June 4, 1998, at the North Loup SDB Church, with Dr. Bernard Keown officiating. Burial was in the Hillside Cemetery near North Loup.
