HOMER – Parmenas A. Norton, for about twenty years a resident of this village, died at the home of Willis S. Ferenbaugh in Cayuga-st., at 9:15 o'clock Tuesday night, at the age of 83 years.
Mr. Norton's house in Cortland-st. was badly damaged by fire on Christmas day and in fighting the fire and smoke he contracted a severe cold, which resulted in pleuro-pneumonia. He was taken ill Friday, the day after the fire, and his reserve strength at his age was insufficient to withstand the attack of disease and he died at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ferenbaugh, where Mr. and Mrs. Norton had been staying temporarily since the fire.
Mr. Norton was born in the town of Truxton, Nov. 18, 1836. Both his parents died when he was only 7 years old and he then went to make his home in Spafford with an uncle, Seymour Norton, where he remained until the Civil war broke out. He enlisted in the Seventy-sixth Regiment. He was wounded in battle, resulting in the loss of an arm and a leg and was honorably discharged from the service and returned to his uncle's home in Spafford.
Soon after the war he was married to Miss Sarah Rice of Otisco Valley. Mr. and Mrs. Norton came from Spafford to Homer about twenty-five years ago. Mrs. Norton's death occurred two years ago last September, after several years of helpless invalidism.
He was again married on May 14, 1919, to Mrs. Margaret Bacon, widow of James Bacon late of Borodino, who survives him. He is also survived by four sisters: Mrs. Orinda Fox, and Miss Elsie Cadwell, both of whom reside at the Home for Aged Women in this village, and Mrs. Jane Maxon and Mrs. Orpha Childs whose homes are in Minnesota.
Mr. Norton was a devout member of the Homer Methodist Episcopal church, having been a church member since boyhood. He was a great Bible student and deeply interested in religious life. His death is a severe blow to his wife and to friends and relatives.
The funeral will be held Friday at 2 p.m., at the Methodist church and burial will be made in the Cortland Rural cemetery.
