Robert Joseph "Joe" Kellerman, 73, of South Coventry, a teacher and track coach and official, died Wednesday at his home of complications from a stroke.
For 33 years, until retiring in 1997, Mr. Kellerman taught math at Great Valley High School in Malvern, and for 18 summers he managed the East Whiteland Swim and Tennis Club.
Mr. Kellerman was athletic director at Great Valley in the 1980s for several years, and was head track coach in the late 1960s and early 1970s. After leaving that position, he assisted other track coaches at the school. He continued to be involved in the sport after his retirement.
In 2002, he helped establish the Great Valley Relays, and was meet director until 2008. That year, more than 1,000 athletes from more than 40 teams participated, including runners from the Philadelphia Public and Catholic Leagues. The Relays emphasize individual performances, and there are no team championships.
Mr. Kellerman was an official for track meets sponsored by the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA), and was a cross-country representative for PIAA District 1. He was also an official for area college track and field meets. He was past secretary and president of the Track and Field Coaches Association of Greater Philadelphia.
For 30 years, until two years ago, Mr. Kellerman was an official at the Penn Relays. He enjoyed the young people and the competitions, and was "a salt-of-the-earth kind of guy," said Carl Stoltz, a former track official and Great Valley boys' track coach.
A native of Oil City, Pa., Mr. Kellerman played on his high school football team. From 1955 to 1959, he served in the Air Force at bases in Maine, Georgia and France. After his discharge, he earned a bachelor's degree from Slippery Rock University. While teaching, he earned a master's degree in mathematics from Ohio University.
Mr. Kellerman and his wife, Sally McLaud Kellerman, met at a wedding and married in 1961.
He was an usher and greeter at St. Thomas More Church in South Coventry, and was an Eagles and Phillies fan.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Kellerman is survived by sons John and Bob; daughters Mary Kleb, Anne, and Susan; two brothers; two sisters; and five grandchildren.
Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m tomorrow at Mauger-Givnish Funeral Home, 24 Monument Ave., Malvern, and from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday at St. Patrick Church, 104 Channing Ave., Malvern. A Funeral Mass will be said at 11 a.m.
