Born in Landskrone, Molotchna Colony, South Russia. Immigrated to the US on the S.S. Nederland, arriving in New York City on August 12, 1882. He and his wife Aganetha (Agatha) were traveling with their son Abraham and his family. Gerhard's wife, Aganetha (nee Warkentin), died before the family arrived or disembarked. Port officials would not release the body to the family as they were not allowed to stay in the Castle Garden immigration area. Mr. Toews needed to hire a stranger to care for his wife's remains. He and the family have never known the place of her burial. She is presumed to be buried near the port area of New York.
