Evening Times; Cumberland, Maryland, Wednesday, April 7, 1909: Lonaconing--Andrew Schuyler, the oldest veteran of the Union army, residing in Lonaconing, died at his home in Pink Row at 2:10 a.m. yesterday. He was a member of McPherson Post GAR and a pensioner. Andrew Schuyler was born in Wishaw, Scotland, December 4, 1824 and came to the United States in 1846. He brought with him his young wife whom he had married a few days before leaving Scotland. The couple settled in Pittsburg, Pa., and later came to Eckhart. They afterwards went to Franklin where they lived fifteen years before removing to Lonaconing. Mrs. Schuyler was Catherine Alexander before her marriage and the mother of thirteen children, of whom six survive. They are: Mrs. Helen Herron, of Cripple Creek, Col.; Mrs. Isabelle McFarland, Mrs Margaret Dick, Mrs Agnes Thompson, all of Lonaconing and Mrs Frederick Schroeder of Oakland and one son, James Schuyler of Lonaconing. Deceased was the oldest member of Barton Lodge No 94 IOOF. He enlisted in Company D, 2nd Md. Vol. PHB, Aug 22, 1861 and was honorably discharged Dec 28, 1864 with the rank of Sergeant. He was mustered into McPherson Post June 5, 1888. Mr. Schuyler was a coal miner the greater part of his life. He worked until he was incapacitated for hard labor. His aged consort survives him."
