Jesse Hightower was born about 1798 and very likely in the Barnwell District of South Carolina. He was the son of John Hightower and his first wife Mary Guess (Guefs). He married Nancy Ann Milhous in South Carolina. She is believed to be the daughter of Charles Milhous of Barnwell District, South Carolina. Jesse Hightower appears on the 1840 Federal Census of Barnwell County, S.C. but clearly left that area shortly thereafter and while having spent some time in Alabama, two children born there, was residing in Jefferson County, Florida by about 1846. He lived the remainder of his life in Jefferson County, Florida and family oral history states he was buried at Springfield Methodist Church Cemetery. There is however no marked grave for him in that cemetery.
The now frequent assignment of the additional Christian name of John to this man is a genealogical error of major proportion. The idea of introducing John came from a misread of the 1850 Federal Census of Jefferson County, Florida. There is no record in existence on which this man ever used any name other than Jesse Hightower. If you see his name listed as John Jesse Hightower you will know you are dealing with poor genealogical work.
