Dr. Louis W. Karlen, 78, of De Smet died Monday, Sept. 6, 2010, at the Good Samaritan Center in De Smet.
His funeral will be Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at American Lutheran Church in De Smet with the Rev. Marty Reynhout officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery at Howard. Visitation will be at the church today from 6:30 to 9 p.m. with the family present.
Louis Karlen was born Nov. 8, 1931, at Des Moines, Iowa, to Louis and Margaret (Storm) Karlen. They moved to Buffalo, N.Y. When his father died, he and his brothers moved to the Karlen Ranch near Vilas. He graduated from Argonne High School and the University of South Dakota, completed two years of medical school at USD and received his medical degree from Kansas University.
He married Betty Stock Jan. 22, 1955. He practiced medicine in Madison before moving to De Smet in 1968. He was a member of the De Smet Christian Alliance Church. His enjoyed farming, restoring old cars, coin collecting, traveling and teaching second year medical students.
He is survived by his wife; four children, John (Pam) of Howard, Debbie (Laird) Beck of De Smet, David (Joan) of Howard and Trey (Jenni) of De Smet; a brother, Robert (Dee) of California; grandchildren; and great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Jack.
Arrangements are with Osthus Funeral Home of De Smet.
