Married to Roxy Edna York in Howell County, Mo. abt 1930. Father to 8 children. Charles, Neta, Clifford, Richard, Shirley, Helen, David, and John Wendell. John was born in 1898 at Atchison, Ks. His mother died shortly after his birth. His father was a railroad worker and took John to his grandparents who were instrumental in raising him. At age 14, John left home, and with his uncle Cyrus carroll went on the road doing odd jobs and searching for adventure. He ended up in Howell county where he met Roxy York at Hutton Valley. They were married shortly thereafter. John worked for various farmers and businessmen. He suffered a severe back injury in the 30's that left him somewhat disabled. He then began painting signs. he was a talented artist and some of his paintings from the early 20's remain in the family today. He was a self-taught musician who played the violin and piano. His disability became worse as he got older and the last few years of his life he was confined to a wheelchair and finally bedfast. He died at home just outside of Willow Springs July 27,1956.
