Julia Ravenel de St. Julien Morris Chabannes, lifelong resident of Tuscaloosa, passed away May 3, 2006 due to a stroke and complications from Alzheimer's. Mrs. Chabannes was born in Tuscaloosa on February 26, 1922 and is the daughter of Julian Lucille Nuzum and Charles de St. Julien Morris of Tuscaloosa.

She is a 1943 graduate of the University of Alabama where she was a member of Phi Beta Kappa academic honorary and Kappa Delta social sorority.

Mrs. Chabannes was active in various civic organizations and is a sustaining member of the Junior League of Tuscaloosa and a member of the First Presbyterian Church. She was a member of numerous social clubs including the Quakers, Mardi Gras Club, Sybarites, Blue Stockings, Music Study Club, Presbyterian Ladies Circle Club, and the United Daughters of the Confederacy. She was also a member of the Vulcan Power Squadron of Birmingham, Civil Air Patrol, and the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary.

She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Lt. Colonel Norbert August Rene Chabannes of Miliana, Algeria, whom she met at the USO in Tuscaloosa in July 1943, upon his arrival with the first detachment of French cadets assigned to the United States for pilot training. Her five children are Rene Chabannes of Dayton, Ohio, Julia and Michele Chabannes of Atlanta, Ga., Charles Chabannes of Houston, Texas, and Norbert Chabannes Jr. of West Palm Beach, Fla. Mrs. Chabannes has six grandchildren, Rene, Jr., Richard, Clayton, Katherine, Alison, and Aaron, and one great grandchild, Kassie. She was preceded in death by her sister, Mary Madiera Morris (Mrs. William Hubert Baughn) of Boulder, Colo., and survived by nephews, Charles and William Baughn.

The family gratefully acknowledges the love and devotion provided by her companion and caregiver, Beronda Green.

Arrangements will be handled by Tuscaloosa Memorial Chapel Funeral Home. Services will be held at the Westervelt-Warner Chapel of the Presbyterian Church on Saturday, May 6, 2006 at 11 a.m., with burial at Tuscaloosa Memorial Park immediately following the service. Friends will be received at Tuscaloosa Memorial Chapel on Friday, May 5 from 5 to 7 p.m. and one hour prior to services at the church.

Memorial can be made to the Tuscaloosa Humane Society.
