George Broyles (Died August 22, 2013)

George Clinton Broyles, 94, of Waverly, Kansas, departed this life on Thursday, August 22, 2013, at Sunset Manor Nursing Home in Waverly, where he had made his home since July 2008.

He was born February 10, 1919, in Ottawa, Kansas, the son of Roy Ellis and Fay Bernice (Caldwell) Broyles.

George spent most of his childhood in Franklin County working along side his Dad. They lived on farms near Richmond, Princeton, Homewood, and Williamsburg; then they moved near Quenemo and finally to a ranch two miles south of Waverly. He was working in the hayfields when he was nine. At age 15, he started helping his dad in the timber during the winters and farming and doing custom work in the summers cultivating with a team of horses and a one-row cultivator. His formal education ended with his 8th grade year. His dad needed him to help with the custom work for other farmers in the area. In 1940, he decided to pursue a different occupation. He went to Wichita and took a nine-week class in sheet metal work. On June 21, 1941, he and Ruby Idell Figgins were married at Rosedale, Kansas. They lived in Wichita and he worked for Cessna until 1943, moved to Lawrence to work on a dairy farm for about three months, and then to the farm they purchased near Agricola where he lived until 2008.

George was a farmer first and foremost. That was his passion from his early childhood. He had a dairy herd and farmed for over 22 years. After closing the dairy, he had a sale and worked in construction for 20 years before retiring in 1982. At age 63, he was home doing what he loved: fulltime farming, raising cattle, restoring antique tractors, and spending the winter months in warmer climate.

He was a member of the Bethany Church of Christ in Waverly.

He was preceded in death by his sweetheart, best friend, and wife of more than 70 years, Ruby Idell (Figgins) Broyles on February 24, 2012, and his only brother, Clifford Eugene Broyles, of Eugene, Oregon, in March 2009.

He leaves his children: Charles Broyles and wife Dianna, Waverly; Georgia Masten, Waverly, and Max Broyles and wife Judy, Williamsburg, KS; eight grandchildren: Roger Broyles, Tamara Gouldner, Gary Masten, Darren Masten, Teresa Chapin, Donita Gottstein, Heather Broyles, and Brandon Broyles; nine great-grandchildren; two step great-grandchildren; and his sister, Joy Bernice Muller, Albany, Oregon.

Services will be held at 10:00 AM on Monday, August 26, 2013, at the Peniel Bible Church north of Waverly. Burial will follow at Waverly Cemetery.
