Ristine Family research indicates that Samuel was the youngest of at least five children born to Joseph and Elizabeth H. (Sheppard) Ristine. Both Joseph and Elizabeth were born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Their children, listed in order of birth were: Elizabeth Hag (1828-1908), Emma (1837-1926), Rebecca (1838-1917), Sarah F. (1843-. 1934), and Samuel W. (1845-1932). All of the children were also born in Philadelphia.

From 1839 until his death in 1883, Joseph worked as as a "Combmaker" in Philadelphia.

Samuel married Mary N. Flannery on September 6, 1869 in Philadelphia.

Samuel and Mary had ten children, listed below in order of birth:

RISTINE - March 12, SAMUEL W., husband of the late Mary Ristine, aged 87. Relatives and friends invited to services Tues., 2 P.M. at son's residence, George J. Ristine, 1522 N. 62d st. Int. Hillside Cem. Visiting Mon.. eve."
