Susan "Susie (Anding) Skelton of Lexington, Mo., passed away Tuesday, Aug. 23, 2005, after suffering a heart attack.
Mrs. Skelton, a native of Pacific, Mo., was born on Aug. 19, 1936, in St. Louis, Mo., the daughter of James Lambright Anding, III and Virginia Jane Booth Anding. She was a graduate of All Saints Episcopal High School in Vicksburg, Miss., and she earned a bachelor's degree in education from the University of Missouri-Columbia in 1958. While at the university, she served as president of the Panhellenic Association, and was a member of Delta Delta Delta social sorority. She married Isaac Newton "Ike" Skelton IV on July 22, 1961, in Pacific, Mo.
When her husband, Ike Skelton, was elected to Congress in 1976, she was elected to serve as the first president of the 95th Congress group, the organization representing spouses of new members of Congress. Later, Mrs. Skelton served as treasurer for two years of the Congressional Club, an organization for Congressional, Cabinet, and Supreme Court spouses. During the 100th Congress, she served as president of the Congressional Club, only the second Missourian to serve in that position. As president, she presided over one of the largest memberships in the history of the organization.
Mrs. Skelton served as president and vice president of International Club III, an organization of Congressional and Ambassador's spouses. She was also a member of Congressional Families for Drug-Free Youth, and spoke at orientation seminars for new members of Congress and their spouses.
In March of 1990, Mrs. Skelton sponsored the nuclear-powered attack submarine USS Jefferson City and was subsequently named to the Board of Trustees of the United States Navy Society of Sponsors. She was one of two women to serve on the Centennial of the United States Submarine Forces Committee.
In Missouri, Mrs. Skelton served two consecutive terms as regent of the Lafayette-Lexington Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was a member of the Daughters of American Colonists, United Daughters of the Confederacy, and the P.E.O. sisterhood. She also served four years on the Democratic State Committee during the 1970s. She served on the Board of Trustees of William Woods University.
In Lexington, she taught Sunday school and was a Cub Scout den mother. Further, she was active in Missouri University Alumni Association events in Lafayette County. Mrs. Skelton was an elder in the First Christian Church of Lexington.
Mrs. Skelton is survived by her husband, Ike, of the home; three sons, CDR Isaac "Ike" Newton Skelton V (USN) and wife, Elena, stationed in Japan. LTC James "Jim" Anding Skelton (USA) and wife, Anita, stationed in Maryland, and H. Page Skelton and wife, Caroline, of Chapel Hill, N.C.; two grandsons, Alexander Boone Skelton and Conor Booth Skelton, Japan; and two granddaughters, Sarah Elizabeth Skelton and Abigail Anding Skelton, Maryland.
Funeral services 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 28, at the Wentworth Military Academy Chapel, Lexington. Private burial will be in Machpelah Cemetery in Lexington. Visitation will be held from 2 to p.m. Saturday, Aug. 27, at Wentworth Military Academy in the Hall of Honor, with the family receiving friends and family from 6 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in Susie's name may be made to the First Christian Church, 1515 South St., Lexington, Mo. 64067 and/or to the Delta Delta Delta Sorority, 901 Richmond Ave., Columbia, Mo. 65201.
