Cheryl Maxine Davis Burns
Thousand Oaks, California

Cheryl Maxine Davis Burns passed away following a short illness on Monday, August 19, 2013, in Thousand Oaks, California. She was born in Des Moines, Iowa on October 24, 1920.

She graduated from East High School in 1938. She then worked for the Northwestern Bell Telephone Company as a telephone operator in Des Moines and transferred to Hollywood, California in 1942, where she continued working as a long distance telephone operator during WWII. In 1943, she met the love of her life, James Francis Burns, Jr., while he was on leave as a sergeant in the United States Marine Corps where he was stationed in the South Pacific. They were married in Hollywood, California on February 28, 1945, and lived in Des Moines, Iowa where they had four children. They returned to California in 1963, as she had always hoped that they would, to reside in the San Fernando Valley. After their children were grown, they moved to Malibu, California in 1972, where they enjoyed traveling in their camper up and down the Pacific Coast, and subsequently in 1994 they moved to Thousand Oaks, California where they lived together until her husband's death in December 2005. Jim and Cheryl were married for 61 years. She enjoyed good health and continued to live in their home until her recent passing.

She is survived by her two sons, Jimmy and Mike; her daughter Sherry Lynn and son-in-law Tom Nulman; two brothers Gary Davis of Urbandale, Iowa, and Don Davis of Amarillo, Texas; three grandchildren, Ryan Burns, Eric (Amie) Nulman, and Cynthia (Bryan) Gresser; great grandchildren, Lucas and Adelaide Nulman, and Oliver Gresser; and many nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Jim; her mother and father, Esther (Johnson) and Claude Davis; her brother Richard Davis (Norwalk, Iowa); and her son Kevin.

She will be deeply missed by her family and by all those who were lucky enough to know her........for it is in giving that we receive and in dying that we are born to eternal life.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
