Wife of Jackson Barnett. In 1926, Jackson and Anna Laura (a White woman) eloped and moved to Los Angeles, building a large home on Wilshire Boulevard. Jackson’s “guardian” at the time accused Anna Laura of kidnapping Barnett so she could spend and inherit his vast fortune of $2,000,000. Anna Laura stated that she gave Jackson his first shave the day they were married and she devoted herself to him and his well-being. Court battles came about regarding the fortune and Anna Laura’s alleged kidnapping and taking Barnett as a husband just for his money. Anna Laura, penniless and sick with cancer, vowed that she would regain her health and reopen the estate case as she retained a bitter resentment against the government. At the time of her death, she was being taken care of the daughter of a former husband.
