Vivian Hattie Orton Hedrick was born, in her words, "somewhere on a hillside in Shannon County" on October 8, 1932. The younger of Wesley and Pauline (Harris) Orton's two daughters, she spent her youth enjoying Jacks Fork River, Leatherwood and walking to Inwood school with her friends. Vivian graduated from Summersville High School in 1953 where she enjoyed English classes the most. Years later, she often proofed her children's and grandchildren's school assignments while quoting from The Little Brown Handbook. After High School graduation, Vivian moved to St. Louis where she worked as a secretary for the Conn-Farrell Paint Company. In 1957 she married Cletus Hedrick, who was her best friend for the thirty-eight years they were married. Vivian became a full time homemaker after the birth of her children. Always anxious to get back to Mountain View, Vivian and Cletus left St. Louis with their daughters in 1968 for their Shannon County home. Vivian was happiest in her role as a homemaker, helper to Cletus, and mother. She enjoyed keeping chickens, a milk cow and producing vegetables in the garden. Vivian was an avid Bible scholar and anytime she wasn't working outside, she could be found at her desk with her Bible and notes. Vivian was preceded in death by her parents, Wesley and Pauline Orton, husband Cletus Hedrick, grandson Derwin Scot Bay, sister Lillian Hedrick and Lillian's infant daughter Lydia. She leaves her example of strength and steadfast faith to her daughters Lillian Collins and Paulette Tune, son-in-law Johnny Collins, grandchildren John (Jay) Collins, Holly Bay, Johanna Wear and husband Jonathan, Brittany Tune, Jason Tune and wife Shari and great grandchildren Zane Smith, Bree Gaghyan, Ian Smith, John Collins, Kyli Smith, Mahayla Collins, Alex Tune, Mason Barnes, Jordyn Tune, Isaac Wear and Bentlee Tune . Vivian passed away at her home, Saturday morning June 1, 2103, making her age 80 years. She will be sadly missed by her family.
Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, June 04, 2013 at 10:00 Am at the Oakside Community Church near Summersville with Bill Oswald Officiating. Visitation will be held Monday evening June 03, at Bradford Funeral Home Chapel in Summersville from 6 to 8 PM. Interment will be in Oakside Cemetery under the care of Bradford Funeral Home.
