Shirley Newton, 87, passed away on August 26, 2013. Funeral services will be held in the Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home Chapel of Memories at 542 Hickory St. in Abilene, Texas on Friday, August 30, 2013 at 2 p.m. with Dr. Jeff Reid officiating. Burial will follow in the Hawley Cemetery under the direction of Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory St. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday evening at the funeral home.

Shirley was born to Burnett "Bernie" and Gladys Newton on November 12, 1925 in Hawley, Texas. (Her paternal grandparents were: Milton M. and Ada BURNETT NEWTON.) She graduated from Hawley High School and worked for Western Union for 27 years. She was a member of Pioneer Drive Baptist Church in Abilene, Texas for over 30 years.

Shirley will be remembered for her love of gathering with friends and family.

Survivors include her sister, Dorothy Davis of Abilene, Texas; her nephew, Larry D. Davis and wife, Teresa of Deer Park, Texas; her niece, Bernis Riley and husband, Dr. Mark Riley of Haltom City, Texas; great-nephews, Jarod Davis and wife, Jennifer, Jason Davis and wife, Niki, Matthew Riley, and John Riley; great-nieces, Cassie McFadden and husband, Jason, and Heather Riley, as well as 8 great-great nephews and nieces.
