father: Louis Dotzauer
mother: Louise Ziteman
William Henry "Harry" Dotzauer was the eldest son of Louis (Ludwig) Dotzauer and his wife Louisa, whose maiden name was probably Backert. Both Louis and Louisa were immigrants from Bavaria; Louis became a naturalized US citizen in 1864, in New York City.

Regarding "Ziteman" listed as his mother's maiden name on Harry's death certificate: Harry's father Louis was the third child of Georg Adam Dotzauer and the ninth child of Georg Adam's wife Barbara (Müzel) (Zizmann) Dotzauer, Barbara apparently having given birth to six children during her first marriage to Erhard Zizmann. The name Zizmann became "Ziteman" in the family memory, and the generations got confused.

Harry was seven-and-a-half years old when his father died, and ten years old when his mother passed away. He and his brothers and sister were taken to live in the New York City Orphans Asylum.

It's amazing that the Dotzauer kids knew anything about their family history, given that they lost both parents at such young ages and didn't seem to have any other family living in NYC. One relative, an uncle whose name nobody could recall, used to visit the children at the orphanage -- until he drowned during one of his frequent swims in the river (Hudson or East -- accounts vary).

The three Dotzauer brothers -- Harry, Ed, and Louie -- remained in touch throughout their lives. Their sister, Helena, is a different story, which can be read here: http://tinyurl.com/helena-dotzauer
