Robert Edward Anderson, of Newbury, beloved husband of Sally Woodsom Anderson, passed away Thursday, April 26, 2012 at the Anna Jaques Hospital.

Born February 20, 1935 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late Robert Allen Anderson and Edythe Mary (Hamilton) Anderson. Bob graduated from Dormont High School in 1953. He was in Student Council and played both football and basketball four years. He received the Service Award, (with Ron Paul), the Harvard Award, Vice President of the Class, National Honor Society and Quill & Scroll Award. He graduated with High Honors. After graduation, he received a full scholarship to Kenyon College in Ohio, where he majored in Biology, played football 3 years, lacrosse 4 years and was a member of Delta Tau Delta.

After graduating from Kenyon College in 1957, Bob was hired to teach Science by Ted Eames in 1957, beginning a long and full career as an educator at Governor Dummer Academy. His dedication to his students and to his school is legendary. Highly organized, totally dedicated to his school and his students, Bob Anderson embodied the boarding school educator in all of its various forms.

As Athletic Director from 1972-1991, he led in the inception of the Independent School League and in the creation of the women's athletic program at Governor Dummer. For 31 seasons he coached the football team, including thirteen as the head coach. His 1968 football team was undefeated. He coached lacrosse every spring of his thirty-nine-year career, serving as Heb Evans' assistant on the varsity for 25 years, bringing the boys lacrosse program to the pinnacle of New England schoolboy competition, and he co-authored Lacrosse Fundamentals, a popular resource for coaches and players.
During the summers of 1959 through 1961, Bob was the Waterfront Director at Camp Tohkomeupog in East Madison, New Hampshire.

In addition to his wife of 35 years, Sally A. (Woodsom) Anderson, he is survived by his former wife, Lois McCormack Anderson of Peabody; his son and daughter-in-law, Scott and Karen Anderson and their children, Laura Kay and Wyatt Troy of Pensacola, FL; his daughter, Deborah Anderson Dalton of West Newbury, and her children, Stephanie McAniff and Ian Dalton and companion Amanda Schueler; three great-grandchildren, the extended Woodsom family and many colleagues and friends.

ARRANGEMENTS: Visiting hours will be held on Saturday, May 5, 2012 from 4:00-7:00 P.M. at Elliott, Woodworth and Rogers Family Funeral Home, 35 Green St., Newburyport, MA. A "Celebration of Life" will be held on Sunday, May 6th, at 12 noon in the Moseley Chapel at The Governor's Academy, 1 Elm Street, Byfield, followed by interment in Evergreen Cemetery, Newbury. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Governor's Academy, Department of Athletics, 1 Elm Street, Byfield, MA 01922.
