On May 16, 1928, he and his older brother Lewis were reported missing after having attended a Pomona Model Yacht Club meeting and failing to return home.
Sadly, both boys had been abducted, sexually abused and later killed in what is now known as the horrific Wineville Chicken Coop Murders. Lewis was 12 and Nelson hadn't yet turned 11. Their bodies were destroyed past the point of identification, so they were declared legally dead on May 26, 1929. They left behind their grieving parents and an entire community that mourned their loss.
