Samuel James Bullock was born at Amsterdam, Montgomery County, New York on June 14, 1843 to Stillman and Elizabeth (McClaren) Bullock. Stillman was born in Salem, Essex County, MA and Elizabeth was born in Scotland. At age 19, Samuel enlisted in the 108th Regiment New York Volunteer Infantry at Rochester, Monroe County, New York to serve three years. On August 11, 1862 he mustered in as a Private in Company ‘H'. He was with the regiment when it left Rochester for the seat of war on August 19, 1862. He was promoted to Sergeant and later wounded in action on July 3, 1863 during the Battle of Gettysburg, causing the amputation of his right leg. He was a Sergeant when he was discharged for wounds on July 15, 1864.

Soon after the close of the war, he became a teacher and entered the Bridgewater (Massachusetts) State Normal School, where he graduated in the summer of 1868. He later became a teacher at the High School at Ashburnham, Worcester County, MA. Afterward, he served as sub-principal at the Prescott School in Charlestown, Suffolk County, MA. In January 1874, he was elected principal of The Bunker Hill School, one of the largest schools in Boston, where he eventually held the position of Master Emeritus.

On October 2, 1884 he married Abby O. Varney in Boston. She was born in Massachusetts in 1848, the daughter of Enos Varney. By 1880, Samuel and Abby resided at 22 Oak Street in Charlestown and later at 360 Tappan Street in Brookline, Norfolk County, MA, where Samuel died on April 4, 1911 from "angina pectoris". He was first buried at Mount Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge, Middlesex County, MA but was reinterred at Woodlawn Cemetery in Everett, Middlesex County, MA later in 1911. Abby died in late November 1921 and was buried November 25, 1921. Samuel was age 41 and Abby was age 36 when they married, so they probably did not have any children.
