WW2 Navy vet; POW; Wake Island defender.

Laurence Maybank Atwood enlisted in the US Navy 27 Oct 1939, at the age of 30. Trained as a medical corpsman, he was assigned to the medical section of the 1st Marine Defense Battalion in San Diego in late fall of 1939. the 1st Marine Defense Battalion was subsequently transferred to Oahu, Hawaii. In August 1941, a detachment from the 1st Defense Battalion was dispatched to Wake Island. The Japanese attacked Wake Island 8 Dec 1941. After two weeks of heroic defense, and no promise of reinforcements, the small detachment was forced to surrender 23 Dec 1941. Members of the Wake Island detachment were take as POWs for the next 45 months, and Atwood was sent to a camp in Shanghai, China. Petty officer Atwood was repatriated to the US aboard the USS Kitkun Bay (CVE-71) in September, 1945.
