Mary Catherine Johnson Henry was born on January 24, 1914 to parents, Robert Walter Johnson and Manche Stanton Johnson. She was their second born child, first daughter of six children: Stanton, Mary, Margaret, James, Robert and Walter. They lived in the Johnson homestead land granted to her great grandfather located on Noah's Ark Road in the Noah's Ark community of Clayton County Georgia. She attended Georgia Women's College in Milledgeville GA where she earned a degree in teaching. She taught first grade in Clayton and Dekalb counties for many years. She married James Thomas Henry Sr. on August 28, 1939. They bought an old homestead located on Gardner Road in Henry County where they lived all the remainder of her life. They had six children: Ann, Bob, Peggy, Jim Jr., Catherine and Beth. She was active in a sorority for teachers (my bad I do not have the name of that sorority but will try to edit this with that info later). She taught 4-H as extracurricular activities for her children and the children of the community. She was active in the Methodist women's group at Bethel Methodist for many years though the family often attended the Baptist church which was the preferred denomination of her husband James. She loved to read but did not watch TV much as it bothered her vision greatly. I suspect she had some sort of eye issue though I never saw her wear glasses. She loved her family and was kind and giving with her friends and neighbors. She enjoyed taking road trips to go see family or attend camp meetings. Her husband did not like to travel on such jaunts so she and often a sister or close friend who was like a sister, Mrs. Ruth Hinton, and several or all of the six children would pile in one of their land cruiser size vehicles during summer months and away they would go for some great adventure. She was quiet at appropriate times but could talk your ear off if she was in a setting where she was comfortable and free to chat. She sadly developed Alzheimer's in her latter years which led to her death in 2000. Her husband would go every day to the nursing home where she lived our her final three years of her life and walk the halls to help her stay as physically strong for as long as possible and then would go and feed her so she would eat as much as possible for as long as possible. They were married 62 years when she died on Dec. 18, 2000. I am blessed to have been her daughter in law. She taught me much. I am thankful for what she taught my husband and her other children for that matter, and have heard from various folks who were her students that she was a truly fine teacher.
