TAMPICO -- Bernice Spears, 85, formerly of Tampico and Deer Grove, died Monday, Jan. 5, 2004 at Cor Mariae Provena Nursing Center in Rockford.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 10 at Tampico United Methodist Church, the Rev. John McFarland officiating. Burial is at 2 p.m. Saturday in Rochelle Cemetery. Visitation is from 6-8 p.m. Friday at Garland Funeral Home, Tampico. Memorials may be made to the Tampico Area Community Building or the American Heart Association.
She was born March 10, 1918 in Wayne City, Ill., the daughter of Frank and Mary (Richardson) Beardin. She married Otho K. Spears March 27, 1937 in Rochelle. He preceded her in death July 29, 2003.
Surviving are a daughter, Nadine Miller of Grand Rapids, Mich.; three sons, Ronald (Paulette) Spears of West Bend, Wis., DeWayne (Chong Hui) Spears of Rockford and Merwin (Frances) Spears of Fort Myers, Fla.; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; three stepgreat-grandchildren; a brother, C.W. "Winnie" (Carol) Beardin of Rochelle; two sisters, Mrs. Rex (Fern) Casey of Ashton and Mrs. Lloyd (Katie) Stroud Jr. of Rochelle; and several nieces and nephews. She was also preceded in death by her parents, three brothers and a sister.
She was a postmaster in Deer Grove for 14 years and drove a school bus. She also helped her husband on a farm near Deer Grove for 35 years.
She was a member of Tampico United Methodist Church and the UMW, Tampico Historical Society, the Tampico Area Community Building and the Illinois Postmasters Association.
