Oliva was the daughter of Johnson Foot and his first wife, Cynthia Sherman. In March of 1835, she married Farnum M. Goulden in Madrid, St. Lawrence, New York. Together, they raised Farnum's daughter, Elnora, from a previous marriage, and had nine other children: Cynthia, Mariam/Miriam (who married Darius Cutler and Charles Derosia), Mary Jane, Elizabeth Charlotte, Orley J. (who died young in Minnesota), Henry Clifton (who died in the Civil War), Farnum Newell, Orson Harvey and Windsor H.
