Kathryn Lavina Ainsworth was born 9 February 1907 in Shenandoah, Page county, Iowa, to Romeo Wilson Ainsworth and his wife Grace Rush Campbell Ainsworth. She was still a toddler when her family moved to Idaho, settling near Idaho Falls where she lived out her school girl years. When just 17, in San Francisco, California, she married Pearly Herman Wineinger. They had one son, Wesley Gordon Wineinger, and later moved to Bristow, Oklahoma where Pearly worked in interior design. They later divorced.

Kathryn's second husband, Percy John Elliot, was in the military and Kathryn traveled the world with him as an Army wife. Although they eventually divorced, she outlived him by many years, settling in Texas near her son.
