Colonel Barbara P. Bacon, of Gettysburg, died August 16, 2013

She was born to the late Francis L. and Clara B. Plumly on June 5, 1926 in Philadelphia, PA, as Grace Barbara Plumly.

She graduated from Abington Friends School in 1944 and received a BA from the Pennsylvania State University in 1948.

Barbara was a 27 year Veteran of the Air Force, retiring in 1986. She was the National Ombudsman for the National Committee for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve between 1972 and 1986.

Upon retirement she located in the Gettysburg area where she continued to remain active as a Governor appointed At Large Member of the State Veterans Commission, helping Veterans well into her late 70s.

Barbara is survived by three children: Cindy Updike of Gettysburg, Susan Engle of Fairfield and Robert Bacon of Mercersburg; three grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m., September 7, 2013, at Centenary United Methodist Church, Biglerville. A private burial ceremony will be held at the Indiantown Gap National Cemetery for Veterans on September 9, 2013.
