OBITUARY :
ROBERT LOWELL BASTIAN, 93, of Hagerstown, Maryland, passed away Sunday, September 1, 2013 at Meritus Medical Center.

Born June 10, 1920 in Lake City, Minnesota, he was the son of the late Andrew and Maude Braun Bastian.

He served in the U.S. Navy and retired from the Pentagon in 1977.

He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.

He was a past national president of the Fleet Reserve Association.

He was a member of Knights of Columbus, VFW, Catholic War Veterans, and Navy Cryptologic Veterans Association.

He volunteered with the Hagerstown Police Department and Hagerstown Community College.

His hobbies were dancing and bowling. He enjoyed Big Band and Polka music.

Robert was preceded in death by his first wife, Veronica Bastian and his second wife, Rose Marie Bastian.

He is survived by two daughters, Rosemary Taylor of Brookville, Ohio and Sheri Edwards of New Philadelphia, Ohio; two sons, William Edwards of Glenville, Pa. and Kenneth Edwards of Garden City, Michigan; 13 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild. He enjoyed spending time with his granddaughter, Candice Romsburg and her daughter Ava.

He was preceded in death by a three sons, Richard A. Bastian, Robert A. Edwards and Dennis H. Edwards.

Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 17630 Virginia Avenue, Hagerstown, Maryland. The Rev. Christopher Moore will be celebrant. Burial will be in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.

The family will receive friends at the Minnich Funeral Home, 415 E. Wilson Blvd., Hagerstown, Maryland, on Saturday from 4 to 6 p.m. The Knights of Columbus will stand vigil.
