Richard's family moved to Topeka where he grew up. He had three great loves: psychology, tennis, and his family. During his youth, his father taught him tennis from old tennis manuals and a passion was born. Richard became well known in USTA sections including the states of Kansas, Florida, Louisiana, Colorado, New Mexico, and Texas. In 2005, he was named to the USTA Missouri Valley Section's Hall of Fame. He had a Ph.D in Clinical Psychology and a private practice spanning 40 years. He enjoyed his clients and valued the act of helping people. In his last two years, he wrote a book "Couples in Conflicts". Richard was a fun, loving father to his eight natural children and two stepchildren from two marriages.

He was described as 5' 11", 140 pounds, ruddy complexion, blue eyes, blonde hair, and employed by the Kansas State Historical Society.
