Andrew was born in Shane's Castle where as a young adult his duties were keeping track of the business dealings and financial dealings of the estate. He was also trained as a teacher. By early 1796 he moved to Edwardsburgh Canada and worked as a teacher. Here he married Jane Armstrong on February 18, 1798. The next year they moved across the St. Lawrence River and became the first settlers of Lisbon Township. Andrew and Jane were the parents of nine children.
