Obituary from Park Region Echo, 4 Nov. 1937: Mrs. Caroline Marquart, one of the pioneers of Leaf Valley passed away October 28 in Minneapolis at the age of 71 years. Mrs. Marquart was born in Germany on October 20, 1866 and came to America when nine years old with her widowed mother. She grew to womanhood in Leaf Valley and was instructed in the Christian faith and confirmed by Rev. Hertwig. In 1886 she was married to Carl Schuelke. One son, William F., was born to this union. He now resides in St. Paul. Her husband passed away in 1888. In 1889 she was married to Henry Marquart. To this union seven children were born: Ella (Mrs. R.A. Wittenbel) of Milbank, SD; John of Leaf Valley; Anna (Mrs. Wm Casey) of St. Paul; Herman C. of Ashland WI; Jean (Mrs. Lloyd Berglund) of St. Paul; Laura (Mrs. Ben Myers) of Parkers Prairie; Norma (Mrs. James Crabtree) of Aberdeen, SD. Twenty one grandchildren also survive. Mr. Marquart passed away June 15, 1930. The widow continued on the old farm until 1933, when she sold the farm and lived with her daughter, Mrs. Ben Myers, in Parkers Prairie for the past four years. She had been in poor health for several months and was taken to the hospital in Minneapolis two weeks ago. Death was due to a cancerous tumor on the liver. Funeral services were held on Monday at 1:30 from the home of her son, John Marquart in Leaf Valley, and 2:00 at the Ebenezer Lutheran Church in Leaf Valley. She was laid to rest in the Leaf Valley Cemetery, Rev. Aug. H. Sieving of Parkers Prairie officiated, assisted by Rev. H. L. Sprengeler of Leaf Valley. Pall bearers were Carl Schultz, Franz Wussow, Fred Brueske, Wm. Schultz, Herman Froemming and Wm. Schoeneck.
