Father Richard Barnett, C.P., Holy Cross Province (1864-1909)
[August 6, 1909]

Born Joseph Barrett on January 6, 1864 in Queenstown, Ireland, he cam to the United States with his parents at eighteen. He entered the Passionists in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and professed his vows on July 15, 1883. His religious name was Richard. He was ordained on October 26, 1890 and was appointed as a professor of philosophy and theology. Some time later he began his apostolate as a preacher of missions. While energetic he also suffered from emotional problems which was the result of tuberculosis. For two years, beginning in May 1907, he was absent from the province. No one knew his whereabouts until he notified the Provincial that he was ill in New York City. The Provincial requested Father Barnett to peacefully return to Chicago which he did. After a short time there it was thought it would be more beneficial to his health to live in Louisville, Kentucky. It is there that he died.
