Lewis E. McGowan, son of George and Caroline McGowan, was born March 19, 1853 at Deerfield, OH. He was the third child of of a family of twelve children, four girls and eight boys, five of whom survive. He came to Michigan with his parents in the summer of 1864. When a young man he bought a farm four miles southwest of Lawrence and through earnest efforts developed it into a fine home. He was untied in marriage to Lizzie Cameron Dec. 9, 1876. To this union four children were born: Irvin E. of Sparta, Mich., Myron C., Guy W., and Clayton C. of Lawrence. His wife passed on before him in the year of 1920. Aug 23, 1923, he was united in marriage to Mrs. Louise Sanders of Decatur, MI. A year ago he sold the old home and moved to Paw Paw, where he passed away Aug 21, 1925, being 72 years, 5 months and 3 days of age. He was a member of the Methodist church and lived a Christian life, a devoted husband, loving father and a good neighbor. Funeral services Sunday afternoon at the residence at 2 o'clock, Rev. Manning officiating. Burial was made in the cemetery west of Lawrence.

Lewis McGowan, once a pioneer farmer of South Lawrence but ;who later sold his farm and moved to Paw Paw, was stricken with apoplexy at his home there August 20. the funeral was held at his late residence and burial took place at Lawrence, the procession of autos being about one mile long, friends being present from Watervliet, Dowagiac, Hartford, Keeler, Corwin, Decatur, Lawrence, Sparta, and Kalamazoo. His body was laid away neath a bank of flowers, by friends from far and near.
