Obituary: H. Vann Atkinson, 88, 621 Gronlund Place, passed away Friday, May 10, 2013, at Dorothy Love Retirement Community, Sidney. He was born Jan. 2, 1925, in Thomasville, GA, the son of William King Atkinson and Maude I. Vann. In 1950 he married Virginia George, who preceded him in death. In 1978, he married Barbara (Cox) Geuy, who also preceded him in death.
He is survived by three children, Roxanne Kaufman, of Mission Viejo, Calif., Brian Atkinson, of Las Vegas, Nev., and Ed Atkinson, of Sidney; three stepchildren, Dale Geuy, Jan Geuy and Sally Ziegler, all of Sidney; 21 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and a brother, James Carroll Atkinson, of Knoxville, TN. A sister, Julie Powell, also preceded him in death.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran, serving in the submarine S-15 during World War II. He was retired from LeRoi. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club and was a life member of World War II Subvets. He was a member of the Sidney First United Methodist Church. He enjoyed volunteering at Wilson Memorial Hospital, the Red Cross and church office. He also enjoyed being a church member and was a member of the church men's chorus. He was a member of the Singing Soldiers of the American Legion for many years.
A memorial service was held Saturday, May 18, 2013, at the Sidney First United Methodist Church.
His body was donated to the Anatomical Gift Program, Boonshoft School of Medicine, Wright State University.
