MARY ANN (COUTE) HANKS, 75, of 29 Newport Ave., died yesterday at home.

She was the wife of the late Curtis Lee Hanks, and the former wife of Edward S. Mattos Sr. of Stonington, Conn. Born in Portsmouth on Aug. 2, 1929, she was the daughter of the late John Duarte Coute and Hortence (Combra) Coute.

Mrs. Hanks was a communicant of St. Joseph Church, where she was a former CCD teacher and a former member of the choir.

She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Aquidneck Chapter 7, in Middletown, and the Emblem Club of the Newport Lodge of Elks.

Besides her former husband, she leaves a son, Edward S. Mattos Jr. of Rockville, Md.; two daughters, Fran Marie Connors of Dorchester, in Boston, and Valerie Anne Cayce of Newport; and four grandchildren. She was the sister of the late John, Manuel, Antone, Joseph and Bento Coute.

The funeral will be held Thursday at 8 a.m. from the Memorial Funeral Home, 375 Broadway, with a Mass of Christian burial at 9 in St. Joseph Church, Broadway at Mann Avenue. Burial will be in the Newport Memorial Park, in Middletown.
