She was the daughter of John Wager and Catherine Bate. She married future Supreme Court Justice Noah Swayne in 1832. They lived in Columbus, Ohio where their nine children were born. Those children were (John) Wager, Catherine, Rebecca, Virginia, Sallie, Mary Llewellyn, Henry Stewart, Noah Haines, and Francis Bond Swayne. Her husband was nominated to the Supreme Court in 1861 by Abraham Lincoln to replace John McLean and took his seat January 27, 1862. He served until January 24, 1881 and Sarah died at the end of that year.
