"Cathleen C. Papadopoulos, 53, anthropologist and counselor
Cathleen Campbell Papadopoulos, 53, of Bethesda, an anthropologist and academic counselor, died of cancer April 4 at the Washington Home Hospice.
Mrs. Papadopoulos was born in Detroit and was raised in Germany, France, Austria, the District and Greece.
Her education includes a Certificat d'Etudes Superieures from the Institut d'Ethnologie of the University of Paris, a bachelor's degree in prehistoric archaeology from Radcliffe College in Cambridge, Mass., and master's degrees in biological anthropology from Harvard and in student development from American University.
Mrs. Papadopoulos conducted field laboratory research on an archaeological expedition to Nea Nikomedia in Macedonia, Greece. She was a teaching fellow in anthropology at Harvard, where she developed and taught courses on human osteology and the archaeological recovery and interpretation of human skeletal material.
She was the manager of the osteological laboratory for the Peabody Museum of Archeology and Anthropology at Harvard as well as a visiting research associate for the Smithsonian Institution, where she studied the pathology of Indian bones from Florida.
She taught cultural and social anthropology classes at Federal City College. In 1985, she became an academic counselor of foreign students at the English Language Institute and Special Programs Advising Center at American University.
She was proficient at languages including Greek, German and French. She also studied Irish Gaelic, Italian and Arabic.
Mrs. Papadopoulos was a member of the Catholic Church of the Little Flower in Bethesda and St. Andrew's Catholic Church in Chincoteague, Va.
Survivors include her husband of 34 years, Spyridon G. Papadopoulos of Bethesda; four children, Georgia Papadopoulos, Mary Alzire Papadopoulos, Irene Papadopoulos and Georgios Papadopoulos, all of Bethesda; a sister, Joan C. Kozar of McLean; and two brothers, L. Andrew Campbell of Manhattan Beach, Calif., and John H. Campbell of Wheatridge, Colo."
