Mrs. Nellie Lawrence Shryock Gerkan reigned as queen of Mansfield's centennial celebration in 1908 and returned 50 years later to be honorary queen of the city's sesquicentennial. Mrs. Gerkan died Thursday in Lake Placid, FL. She was 86.
To commemorate the farm wagon float on which her throne was borne in the 1908 "Feast of Ceres", Mrs. Gerkan rode in the sesquicentennial parade in a horse drawn calash.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Myla Taylor with whom Mrs. Gerkan made her home in Lake Placid, and Mrs. D. K. Woodman of Mansfield; two granddaughters and a great-grandson.
