Memories of the shock that paralyzed the nation when Lincoln was shot in his box at Ford's oepra house in Washington, D.C., were revived by news of the death last Sunday of Mrs. John T. Ford, widow of the founder of Ford's Opera house, Baltimore, and owner of the Washington theatre at the time the President was assassinated. Mr. Ford died in 1894.
Mrs. Ford was 92 year old, and had lived for 64 years in a large mansion house at 1536 North Gilmore Street, Baltimore, set in the midst of a city block, but itself an old place with trees and gardens around it. In the old house was one of her most precious possissions, a protrait of George Washington that hung from the box in which Lincoln was sitting and which still bears the rent torn by the spur of John Wolkes Booth, as he leaped to the stage with his cry, "Sie Semper Tyrannis!"
Funeral services for her were held Tuesday and the she was buried in Loudon Park Cemetery. Mrs. Ford was survived by eight children. Two, Charles E. and John T. Ford, are joint managers of the historic old theatre in Baltimore which bears the family name, and which ranks among the historic and traditional playhouses of the country.
