Lowenstein, Albert M. (Al)

Longtime Greenville business and civic leader Albert M. "Al" Lowenstein, 82, died Friday, May 21, 2004, in Briarcliff Health Center in Greenville.
Services will be Monday, May 24, 2004, at 10:00 A. M. in Coker-Mathews Chapel with Rev. Randy Rather officiating. Burial will be in Forest Park Cemetery.
He was born, June 20, 1921, in Ardmore, Oklahome, to Sol and Eva Levy Lowenstein.
Mr. Lowenstein came to Greenville in 1947 and purchased Levy's Jewelers from his uncle, Harry Levy. He married Norma Jean Walker on Decembesr 31, 1951, in Greenville. They worked side-by-side at the business for more than 50 years.
During his first year in the downtown buriness, he was president of the Jaycees, and during his term of office membership increased from eight to 125 persons.
He was described as one of the community's most successful fund-raisers, and he assisted the late Col. John Miller in establishing the Greenville YMCA for families, heading the building fund drive which exceeded its goal.
In 1985, he was named Worthy Citizen of the Year.
Mr. Lowenstein held two lifetime memberships in the Chamber of Commerce and served on a number of boards including the YMCA and Jaycees. He and his wife, Jean, were both members of the board of directors for the Greenville Entertainment Series and the Dallas Symphony Orchestra Series in Greenville.
He was also a member of the Board of Development, the Downtown Business Association where he co-chaired the budget committee, Lions Club, Rotary Club and Lion Backers. He was a 32nd Degre Mason-a member for 60 years- and he was a Shriner for more than 50 years.
He attended the University of Oklahoma, the University of Illinois and the University of Missouri where he received his degree. He was an officer in the U. S. Army during World War II and spent a year in occupied Japan.
Surving are his wife, Jean; a son James Lowenstein of Dallas, a sister, Helen "Weedie" Klein of Houston and his beloved sheltie dog, Blue.
Pallbearers will be Terry Albrecht, Bobby Stovall, Jim Rogers, James Roberts, Jimmy Wright, Jay McCaffrey, Bill Thomas and Matt Chapman. Honorary pallbearers will be Leo Hackney, Roy Warren and members of the Greenville Rotary Club.
Visitation will Sunday, May 23, from 2:00 P. M. to 4:00 P. M. at Coker-Mathews Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to Greenville YMCA, 1915 Stanford, Greenville, Texas 75401.
