Janie was born in Aiken, South Carolina. She grew up in Augusta, Georgia with her mom Pinkie and her five sisters and one brother, Her sisters, Nell, Wilhelmenia, Marguerite, Alberta (Johnny Mae), and Frankie, and her brother Harold. She attended and graduated from Lucy Laney High School in Augusta. She married Willie Bernard Dalton, also from Augusta. They soon moved up to New York to join the rest of the family. They had five kids, Maurice, Mark, Michael, Bernadine, and Ulysses. Bernard passed away in 1970, and Janie passed away in 1980.
