Possible memorial found. Uniquely carved stone. Plans being made to send the memorial to East Tennessee State U., Department of Geology for further evaluation. The memorial was large in size and approximately 4 1/2" in thickness. Inscription appears to have been made with a sharp pointed tool. Readable inscription:

A year is visible and could be 1805 or 1807.

Signed the Watauga Petition on 1778 and acquired lands then in Rowan Co., NC which later became the Siam Valley on the south side of the Watauga River in Carter Co., TN.

He is identified by Katherine K. White in "KING'S MOUNTAIN MEN," Gen Pub Co., Balt., MD, 1970, as a Revolutionary war soldier who was in the Battle of King's Mountain in 1780. The DAR records state he was a volunteer soldier under Capt. Shelby in the battle. He resided in Washington Co., NC/TN during the war and afterwards. Served as a volunteer in Captain Shelby's Company at the Battle of King's Mountain. This was the turning point of the American Revolution in the south.

The Battle on King Mountian occured October 7, 1780. The result was British Major Patrick Ferguson was killed among 150 British. More than 800 surrendered as prisoners. The "over-mountain" men losses were less than sixty.

THE WATAUGA PETITION

This petition was sent to North Carolina from the people of the Watauga Valley Settlement (present day Washington and Carter County, Tennessee) asking for protection from the state of North Carolina. This petition wa devised in 1776.
