He was a Doctor on board the hospital ship "USS Comfort AH-6". On Apr 28,1945, just 50 miles south of Okinawa a Japanese kamikaze pilot disregarded the lighted markings of the fully loaded hospital ship and crashed his plane into the U.S. navy ship. The plane struck the starboard side amidships, on the superstructure deck directly where the 3 operating rooms were located. All three were busy taking care of wounded and they were running full capacity. Nearly everyone in the operating rooms were killed; Drs., nurses, enlisted medics and patients. Twenty eight were killed outright and 48 wounded and of that number were six nurses and six doctors. The plane's engine went through the main deck and second deck before it came to rest. The bomb blew holes thru the superstructure and main deck.
Three days after the attack the Comfort arrived at Guam (May 3) in Apra Harbor. Four hundred sixty-eight Army and Navy patients were taken off to Navy Base Hospital #18 for further treatment. Thirty-one bodies were received and a mass funeral service was held at Cemetery #1 on a hill overlooking the Apra harbor.
