The Summit County Beacon, Akron, Ohio, 09 Aug 1860, p3:
DIED, in this village, on Sunday the 5th inst., Mrs. RACHEL BROWN, widow of the late Jacob Brown, Esq., aged seventy-one years, and nine months. She was born in Jefferson County, Virginia, Nov. 14th, 1788, and was married to Jacob Brown, of Loudon County, in that State, on the 14th of January, 1807, and came to Akron in the Spring of 1827. Major Mills is the only person, now living, who was here when Mr. Brown arrived. Indeed, Akron was then a wilderness. Mr. Brown was connected with Thomas P. May, of Cleveland, in business, and erected the "Big Brick" building in the South village, and, for many years, was one of the Trustees of the Township. He died in November, 1847, at the age of sixty-one. Dr. Cole came into the place a short time after Mr. Brown, and he and Major Mills are believed to be, now, the only settlers of that early day.
