Alice Britt, the only child of Thomas & Mary Ann (née Reddin) Britt of Ringsend, Ireland was baptized at St. Mary's Haddington Road, the Catholic Church of Ringsend.
She had at least three older half-siblings, Richard, John & Elizabeth Britt, from her father's marriage to his late 1st wife, Mary (née Caffrey) Britt.
Shortly after Alice's birth, her father Thomas passed away and she was raised by her mother's 2nd husband, William Grimley, who had a one child, Matthew, with his late 1st wife Catherine (née Byrne) Grimley. Alice's family grew to include four more, younger, half-siblings; William Jr., Anne, Margaret and Mary Anne Grimley.
On September 27, 1878 Alice married Michael Gowan, a sailor from Skerries at the same church at which she was baptized. After their marriage they used the McGowan form of the name. Alice & Michael, now a Master Mariner, had 14 children together.
Shortly after the Christmas season ended and the new year of 1908 began, Alice entered the hospital due to severe back pain. She passed away just weeks later, age 49, leaving her still young family devastated.
Her Mass Card reads:
A light is from our household gone,
A voice we loved is stilled,
A place is vacant in our home,
Which never can be filled.
✞ Alice McGowan is buried in the McGowan family plot at Glasnevin Cemetery. With her are her 5 young children who predeceased her, Marianne, John, Matthias, Michael & Martha as well as Martha's twin Morgan & his wife Madge.
