His father, Abraham, moved the family to Ottawa County, Ohio before 1840. Richard, along with brother Abraham, traveled to Placerville (aka Hangtown), CA in 1859 to seek his fortune. Failing in the gold fields he returned to Ottawa, CO. Ohio (Port Clinton)early in 1860 and founded a fishing business, one of the most successful on Lake Erie at the time. He retired to Calif. about 1899, bought land in Riverside, County and farmed oranges. The story goes that at his death, a scoundrel managed to rob Richard's aged widow of his Calif property other then his home at 775 North Fair Oaks in Pasadena.
