Alfred Taylor joined the US Navy as a Midshipman, on January 1, 1825, and during the Civil War reached the rank of Commodore. He continued in service after the war, retiring as Rear Admiral in 1872. He died on April 19, 1891, aged 80.

Alfred Taylor, "Rear Admiral USN," swore in his passport application dated August 5, 1873 (filed in New York County, New York) that he was born in Virginia on or about March 23, 1811.
