Reverend James Chalker Saunders, age 83; beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, departed this life on Monday, September 16, 2013 from his home in Penney Farms.
Reverend Saunders was a native of Clay County. A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served his country honorably during the Korean Conflict. Reverend Saunders served as Mayor of Penney Farms for 20 years and had also pastored seven churches in the area at different times.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Mytzi Taylor Saunders and 5 children, Deborah Kloke (Allen), James Saunders, Jr. (Lisa), Angela Ryan (Jim), Karey Saunders (Brenda) and Jonathan Saunders (Martha). He is also survived by 12 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren and 2 sisters, Betty Tew (Arnold) and Pansy Starling. James and his wife also cared for many foster children including on special foster daughter, Kathy Wilkerson.
Funeral services will be held 1:00 PM, Friday, September 20, 2013 at First Black Creek Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday, September 19, 2013 at Helm-Gallagher Funeral Home from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM. Arrangements are under the care of HELM-GALLAGHER FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION SERVICES, 1811 Idlewild Ave., Green Cove Springs, FL.
