Shirley Jean Marken was born December 14, 1934 on the farm near Alexandria, SD to Franklin and Alma (Hasselbring) Phelps. She grew up and attended school at Bridgewater, graduating from Bridgewater High School in 1952. On January 4, 1956 she married Richard "Dick" Marken at Bridgewater. They made their home in Bridgewater until moving to Mitchell July 1, 1977. Shirley was a devoted wife, mother and homemaker. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church where she served as a Deacon and Sunday School Teacher for many years. She was a 4-H Leader for over twenty-five years.
She was preceded in death by her parents and two sons-in-law, John Hinks and Conley Van Wyhe..
